A Halloween Poem

This is a little late, but here it is, a halloween-ish poem:

here i’ll spin a winsome rhyme
about an aged, older time
when men did fear the outer dark
and night, it held an evil spark

sunlight rose, but it warmed few
and those it did were likely through
with life already, in their graves
rotting through to better days

in the shadows, things did creep
and they kept many from their sleep
except for those who held the power
to hold back the witching hour

like many songs and tales of old
you will find, nothing we’ve told
for secrets made and secrets kept
are locked away, in darkness crept
